Research Team

Michael Cusimano is a neurosurgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital and a Professor at the University of Toronto. He received a Ph.D. in Educational Measurement and Evaluation from the University of Toronto in 1997. Dr. Cusimano is involved in several research initiatives and injury prevention organizations. His current research focus is measuring the effectiveness of educational interventions as a strategic approach to preventing injuries. His primary area of research interest is injury prevention education. He is the principal investigator of this multi-year province-wide evaluation study of the Think First for Kids program. Other research interests include brain and pituitary tumours, quality of life, medical education, and evaluation research methodological approaches.

 

Mary Chipman is a professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto. She received an M.A. in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Toronto in 1965. Her epidemiological research has been in the areas of traffic collisions, home safety, and other various causes of injury, with a focus on risk factors and prevention. Mary Chipman brings her expertise in statistical and research design to the project.

 

 

Peter Donnelly is a professor of Physical and Health Education and Director of the Center for Sport Policy Studies at the University of Toronto.  He has published widely in the field of sociology and sport.  He brings expertise in social aspects, politics and cultures within institutions of sport.

 

 

 

 

 

Charles Tator is a Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto and has published more than 200 peer reviewed articles focusing on brain and spinal injury and the prevention of injury.  He has been awarded the Order of Canada for his long-term involvement in the field of Neurotrauma prevention. He has worked with a large number of consumer organizations and sports organizations across Canada and is a recognized expert in the field.

 

 

Richard Volpe is a professor in the Department of Community Health at the University of Toronto.  He has done a number of studies related to injury prevention in youth and was author of a major work on best practices in injury prevention which attempted to translate evaluative research so that it could be effectively used by stakeholders in the injury prevention field.
